The Aizu-nuri Style
Urushi lacquer art in the Aizu-nuri tradition began in the Aizu region, in the western part of Fukushima Prefecture, and has been practiced there since the Edo Period. Basin-shaped valleys keep the local air humid, which suits Urushi work nicely. Decoration ranges widely and includes traditional symbols of good fortune. Fine, shallow engravings give those designs an elegantly gentle expression. The industry itself dates back to 1590 (Tensho Period), encouraged by Ujisato Gamo, the feudal lord of Aizu. Growing Japanese lacquer trees for Urushi sap, decorating lacquerware and finishing all happened inside the Aizu region, forming a holistic industry that continually pursued technological innovation. Sitting close to Edo, Aizu-nuri lacquerware started being exported overseas toward the end of the Edo period.
