Damascus steel work is thousands of years old. A pattern gets engraved into a steel or iron surface, a thin sheet of gold is laid over it, and a small hammer presses the metal deep into the design. Heating the object to roughly 800°C finishes the job: the steel oxidizes and darkens while the gold brightens. Arab craftsmen carried the method into Spain, and the town of Toledo refined it over the centuries.
Pelikan took up the technique for the Toledo model in 1931, and it stuck — the design has stayed nearly untouched since. The decorative sleeve today is a single piece of Sterling Silver, worked through several steps until the motif sits under a layer of gold (or palladium, for a silver finish). Hand engravings mean no two pens match, and each Pelikan feather looks alive because of it. Output is limited to about 200 pieces a month given the labor involved. Black high-quality resin forms the cap, front piece and end piece.
Owning a Toledo means owning a piece of art and a small piece of history.
