Purple has always pulled me in. A velvety bloom, a soft lavender — both stop me in my tracks, and purple ended up with a starring role in my garden. Violet shows up in waves through the year: tiny iris reticulata, crocus and hellebores in early spring, then alliums, fritillaries and fragrant lilacs. Loropetalum, cotinus, ninebark and heuchera supply the deep foliage base. As spring fades, siberian iris, salvia and several shades of purple clematis take over; reddish purple daylilies, drumstick alliums, French lavender and dahlias carry summer, and periwinkle purple asters close the season. What I wanted here was the feeling of seeing perfect purple blossoms open for the first time, with those layered violet hues echoing across the garden.
For the pen I picked several shades of violet drawn from favorite inks, swirled with ribbons of sparkling lavender. Rose gold trim sets off the material, custom made by Tailored Pen Company. Leonardo has been a favorite brand of mine for years, and I'm thrilled my idea became one of their pieces.
The name Fioritura Viola means a purple blossoming, and fioritura also carries the sense of an ornamental flourish in music and calligraphy. It fit the garden and my love of purple.— @nibsandflourishes
