The Road of the Tōkaidō
Edo to Kyoto — the Tōkaidō once carried the pulse of Japan.
Travellers moved through its fifty-three stations, from the first step at Nihonbashi to the final crossing at Sanjō Ōhashi,
passing shifting landscapes, changing seasons and quiet moments of reflection.
Lords, merchants, pilgrims: no two journeys looked alike, yet the road itself never changed.
In the nineteenth century, Utagawa Hiroshige caught those fleeting scenes — rain falling over distant villages,
silhouettes crossing bridges, Mount Fuji rising in silence — and a road became an experience that outlasts its own time.
Today the journey carries on.
The distance is the same.
Only the rhythm has changed.
