Seasonal Waka Poetry
Four seasonal waka poems were picked by Sailor from the Kokin Wakashū (compiled in 905) and the Shin Kokin Wakashū (compiled in 1205), then printed straight onto the fountain pens.
Waka is a classical Japanese verse form, and it carries a lot with very few words. Nature and feeling sit at its centre: the turning of the seasons, love, a moment slipping past.
SPRING
Spring Waka by Ki no Tomonori
A spring day of soft sunlight, and still the cherry blossoms won't settle. They keep falling.
AUTUMN
Autumn Waka by Fujiwara no Michinaga
Leaves come down and a gentle wind moves through; on nights like that the heart turns wistful all at once.
SUMMER
Summer Waka by Ono no Komachi
Gazing at the stars before dawn on a summer night, each one fills me with something close to nostalgia.
WINTER
Winter Waka by Fujiwara no Teika
Snow builds into a white blanket and the crane tracks are covered fast. As if hiding the truth, it drops from the mountaintops without a sound.
