The motif comes from Izumo Shrine, where floating clouds cover the ceiling. Platinum renders that sea of clouds in coloured urushi, with silver worked through the outer edges so the layered colours rise to the surface. Ginsen-Yakumon and Togi-Yakumo both take a long series of steps, and none of them can be rushed.
Byakudan-nuri takes its name from the way the body colour shifts over time, much like the sandalwood burned in Kodo incense ceremonies. An ebonite body sits underneath, paired with an 18K gold nib and cartridge or converter filling. Note that the cap doesn't post.
